Herb Collecting on the Byzantine Trail

For the last two years, Volker (Volli) Krätzig, who has been living on the island since October 1981, has offered us an opportunity to share his knowledge of the wild mountain herbs and plants, leading a walk through the valley of Afkoulaki (Spring Valley) up to Lefkes and then on down the Byzantine trail to Prodromos, stopping for lunch at the traditional restaurant of Tsitsanis (tel. 42258).

The walk is free of charge, although a donation towards making this an ongoing annual event would be appreciated.

If you would like to participate, be at Nikitas Patisserie (tel. 42230) at the crossroads in Marpissa at 10.00am on Saturdays, 8th, 15th or 22nd April. We will leave at about 10.30 to drive up to the old monastery in Afkoulaki from where the walk will begin and last between 3-4 hours.

Wear sensible shoes, bring some water and any books you may have on Mediterranean plants and herbs that can help you to identify the typical mountain species such as oregano, sage and thyme. Volli can give you a lot of good information (in German & English) about which herbs are good for teas, incense, etc. If the weather is really bad , the walk will be postponed until the following day (Sun). For info, call Volli on 0945-275301.
