Saint George's Day

by Karen Barratt, June 2000
1st May was the name day for all those named Georgos or Georgia, and many of them were to be found at the Aghios Georgos Monastery high above Drios.

Some of you will already know that for quite a few years there has been a restoration programme in progress. This has now been completed and is a credit to all those concerned.

The old monastery enjoys a wonderful position as so many do, remarkably sheltered from the prevailing winds with fine views over Piso Livadi and Drios. Ample springs supply it with water and it is easy to imagine how the old monks must have toiled in the grounds - the ancient trees probably could tell quite a story.

However, the story continues - the long-deserted monastery is now officially re-dedicated and has already one monk in residence - with more to follow.

The ceremony was performed by the Bishop and witnessed by the faithful in the little church in the central courtyard. Food and wine was then provided for everyone. The dignatories went for their meal which was served in the new refectory.

As it was also Protomaios, ladies were to be found picking wild flowers and sitting in the garden making their traditional May Day wreaths.

The sun shone warmly, the smell of sage and thyme was all around, happy Georgos and Georgias were everywhere - a blessing indeed!
