What's On in June

28th May-2nd June - OCTOPUS invites you to explore the seashore, where the land meets the sea, by snorkelling and on foot. Also, throughout the summer, speedboat trips to nearby islands and secluded beaches, offering snorkeling and diving courses. Call Peter on 0932-289649 or 42650.

2nd-4th June - Blood donation (blutspende in German) postponed from May. Look out for the banners saying “AIMODOSIA”. This is a very important and easy social service for each of us to perform for those in need. Blood will be taken between 08.30 and 13.30hrs and 18.00-21.00hrs on Friday 2nd, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th. Check with the Health Centre for further details on 22500.

4th June - Karaoake Night at Maracaibo (located at the beginning of Livadia Beach - look for the lights and hammocks) with CDs and video and free snacks. Tel. 22894 or 0945-278274 for further info, and see advert on opposite page.

8th June - Analypsis (Ascension) Festival in Piso Livadi around 9p.m. - octopus, mezedes, wine and ouzo are offered by the local community. There is a colourful procession and traditional dancing until the early morning hours.

17th-18th June - Pentikosti (Whitsunday) and Aghiou Pnevmatos (Whitmonday). Festival in Lefkes over this weekend with stalls and music. Performance by the Archilochos Chorus (To Axion Esti) on the Sunday evening.

from 20th June - Euro-football for two weeks on big screen TV at ANEF (tel 24926, advert page 10), Santé (tel 22504) and Maracaibo (tel 22894, advert page 3).

23rd June - Aghios Ioannis tou Kleidona. Around 8pm in the Plateia tou Christou in Marpissa, May wreaths are burned on bonfires over which young men and women leap. Usually also celebrated in Lefkes at the Aghia Triada and in Naoussa by the main square.

24th June - Aghios Ioannis Prodromos Lambroforos (St.John the Baptist). The village of Prodromos celebrates that evening with music and dancing.

26th June-9th July - two weeks intensive yoga course with two teachers. Class every day. Call 92042 or email oona@parosweb.com.

During June ... as you may have read in our April edition, the well-known mezzo-soprano Barrett Cobb and her husband, conductor and pianist Harry Saltzman will soon be arriving in Paros for their annual month here. They hope to give at least one recital during their visit, possibly in aid of a local charity - however, nothing definite has yet been arranged at the time of going to press, so if you are interested to have further details, call us here at The Foreigner on 42092 and we will let you know as soon as we hear !

and in July ...

1st July - 9pm in Naoussa Harbour - Chris Stockdale arrives at the end of his marathon swim from Delos. Traditional Greek celebration with wine, music and dancing.

1st July - Aghioi Anarghyroi (the Penniless Saints, Cosmas and Damian) Festival at the monastery above Paroikia.

2nd July or 9th July (date not yet decided) - Yiorti Krasiou kai Psariou - Naoussa Feast of Wine and Fish. Held in the evening at the limani (port). Food and wine generously donated by the citizens of Naoussa. A display of traditional dancing will be followed by your chance to join in. Call the Naoussa Koinotita on 51220 nearer the time for the date.
