Poetry Greece

Poetry lovers will certainly be interested to know of the existence of a new publication called “Poetry Greece” featuring poems by Greek poets and on Greek themes, reviews, translations and articles.

The second (Summer 2000) issue is devoted to women poets and contains a wide selection of work by Greek poets living both in Greece and abroad. Although the publication is in English, some of the poems are published in both languages - an excellent way, incidentally, to improve your Greek vocabulary!

Also included is an article about Sappho - who lived around 600BC on the island of Lesvos - and her poetry, plus an analysis of the poetry and politics of Greek women poets, illustrating the changing themes through the 20th Century. From poetry which typically expressed love for a man as the sole reason and justification for existence (see this month’s Poet’s Corner, for example), the development of womens’ poetry is charted through world war, civil war, hardship and struggle, to a breaking with tradition and law, and the expression of self-discovery, self-definition and emerging new identity.

You might also be interested in the idea of taking a creative writing course - organised during October in Corfu by Poetry Greece - with the well-known poet Roger McGough as one of the tutors.
