Paros Municipal Library News

by Silvia Lubitz-Skaramagkas, Sept 2001
Following the article I wrote in the July edition informing you of the project to establish a municipal library in Paroikia, here is some more up to date information on the project's status.

I have spoken to Mr Jannis Ghikas who is responsible for the project and he definitely can use our help from September onwards with decorating and with cataloguing the foreign books. The library also welcomes financial donations and donations of books in any language. The official opening is now planned to take place around the end of October.

In the meantime a public meeting has been held at the Archilochos Hall, and Beate Beyer-Arvanitidis attended to represent IWOP. Mr Ghikas announced that the library will also be supported by the foreign community and invited Beate to speak. Beate explained to those attending that IWOP has had a number of discussions about what to do with their unneeded books in the past. We have thought of holding a bazaar to raise money for the Health Centre, but now donating them to the library would seem to be a more appropriate option.

For those of us who have already decided that this is what we prefer to do, Christa Nomikos' husband has very generously made us a gift of a stamp with our IWOP logo so that each book donated under the umbrella of IWOP will be marked accordingly.

Please contact Jannis on 21656 or 23782 or myself on 23187 (mornings), 22983 (afternoons) for further information.
