When it Rains, it Pours!

Finally, after we had been wishing and praying so long for rain - the skies opened and it rained... and it rained... and it rained!

The above photo, taken in Naoussa (thanks to Marilyn Rooks), shows just one aspect of the aftermath of the flooding that occurred as a result of the stormy weather on the weekend of 3-4 November.

Houses, shops and workshops were flooded and many parts of Paros' road network were badly eroded. Numerous small streams were formed and swept topsoil, stones and debris downhill as they made their way towards the sea.

Municipal and Water Authority (DEYAP) personnel were working daily from dawn on Sunday the 4th using bulldozers and lorries to clear the roads and clean out the mud from affected buildings.

Local authorities (the Dimarchos and the Eparchos) have written a joint letter to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and to members of parliament responsible for the Aegean area requesting extra funds to pay for repairing damages caused to public and private property on the island.

Anyone whose property was damaged should report the details to the Eparchio (in the square by Aligaria Restaurant, tel 24750). A committee formed following decision no. 10992/8-11-01 will then inspect the property to register and estimate the damage.
