by The IWOP Halloween Committee, December 2001 / January 2002
At the end of October the International Women's Organization of Paros hosted the Third Annual Benefit Event (and our second Halloween Party). The venue was once again Aligaries Restaurant near Naoussa which was lovingly transformed by many willing hands and the odd spell or two into a supernatural setting for the evening.
The music was supplied by a group comprised of Kosmas Marinatos, Elias Skiadas and Sophia Pappa from Antiparos, who kept us all entertained with their impeccably professional performances and more than made up for the mysterious disappearance of the DJ (Angelos, where were you?!). Prizes for the best fancy dress were awarded to Mary Godfrey, Tony Sassaman and Celia Johnston.
We were astounded at the generosity of the local businesses in all the main villages and towns and had planned to list in detail exactly who gave what. Unfortunately our system of record keeping has proved erratic to say the least and, rather than run the risk of omitting one of our benefactors, we offer our apologies, sincere thanks and promise of a fool-proof system ready for next year.
The hundred and fifty gifts and bonuses made handsome prizes for the lucky dip and thanks to the generosity of the revellers, who included a number of well-known local political figures as well as representatives from the Paros Health Centre, all tickets were sold and we managed to exceed last year's takings despite the date clashing with a meeting of the council in Naoussa.
With over ninety people at the event, the amount raised, in excess of 450,000drs, will be divided equally between equipment for the Health Centre in Paroikia and the new project to build, fund, equip and staff a centre in Naoussa for those islanders with special abilities and needs.
Markos Koveos spoke briefly about this endeavour and Silvia Lubitz-Skaramangas explained our aims and offered our appreciation to all those who made the event possible, including Nikos Kritikos who kept the restaurant's prices at last year's level.
We hope this date is now firmly noted in every social calendar and will become ever more successful as a fund-raising event, a meeting point for the women's group and the island's community and leaders, as well as a fun night out for adults and children alike. We have taken care to exclude anything that might be frightening for the young guests and have some plans already hatching for a special children's lucky dip for next year with every other ticket winning a prize.
Many thanks to Silvia Lubitz Skaramangas, Obdulia Lopez-Henriquez, Mary Godfrey, Tanya Godfrey, Yvonne Jonsson, Rosemarie Lubitz, Lornie Caplan, Christa Nomikos, Loni Ikonomou, Kristel Henauer and Nehama Weininger for their help, hard work and great company! And sorry to Ingrid Hassinger who we forgot to thank last year. Hope we've remembered everyone this time!
