In the Deep Midwinter ...

by Vicki Preston, February 2002
Following two or three days of minor snow flurries, Parians awoke one morning last month to find the island fantastically transformed into a winter wonderland!

The freak weather conditions experienced in Greece during the first week of January resulted in transportation being seriously disrupted throughout the country. Ships were confined to port, air travel was subject to numerous delays and cancellations, national highways were blocked by snow, ice and stranded cars and the army had to be mobilised to help keep roads open. With sub-zero temperatures reaching record levels and winds gusting at 9-10 Beaufort, snowfalls as far south as Crete left villages cut off, people stranded and crops damaged.

So, if you're sitting in some northern clime right now envying those nearer to the equator, maybe you'd like to think again !!

Many thanks to Harry & Margarita at Annousakis Market. Nehama Weininger and Maria Demetriades for the photographs.
