Waterfalls & Waterworks

by Vicki Preston, March 2002
When the snow melted and the rains came this winter, one result was a beautiful cascade of water from the hills - like this "waterfall" in Lefkes. And with wild flowers springing up everywhere, Paros becomes greener and more lovely every day. Yet when we think of the hot, parched and thirsty summer months to come, it is sad to see the water we will need so badly then running into the sea now because it has nowhere else to go.

However, some works are already underway to conserve this precious resource. We spoke with Georgos Poulios, President of the Marpissa Community, who informed us about the building of a dam on the way to the Monastery of Aghios Georgios near Marpissa, planned for completion by mid-summer. At a cost of 228,000,000 drachmas, this major project by the Eparchio of Paros will trap the rainwater from the stream that flows from the mountaintop, but rather than forming a reservoir above ground, channels will be dug so that the water will be absorbed into the ground to fill the underground cisterns of the local farmers.

Another important water conservation scheme already in progress is the desalination project in Naoussa with the company Ionics Italba Spa. A special Municipal Committee has been assigned to deal with all outstanding issues so that it can become operational. We'll bring you further information on the status of that project as it becomes available.
