Tarot-Astro Column

by Liz Westerhof, May 2002
Card 19 - The Sun.

After all the stormy times of the Moon, here comes the Sun (card 19).

The child on the horse symbolises freedom while the grey stone wall behind is a symbol of the past, limited by restricted insight into reality. The child represents play and optimism - like The Fool (card 0), except that the child has lived more than The Fool and its playing comes out of a more authentic experience.

Keywords of the Sun are rebirth and renewal. It indicates a significant turn in the journey towards new forms of artistic and intellectual expression. A union of the conscious with the unconscious mind brings about a new person and new values. Something new happens and pain is left behind. It also signifies happiness of all kinds: emotional, material, creative and social, abundant joy, optimism, enlightenment, radiance and courage.

Reversed it means a delay of rebirth and a clinging to painful struggle out of fear of letting go of the past. Energy cannot be freed for the movement toward new life.

However, all these restrictions are no more than a cloud, which will pass. The sun is much stronger. So I wish you a sunny May! Liz
