Poet's Corner

New York Rain
by Jeffrey Carson

In New York's night the rain
Comes pouring down again.

Brown walls are windy-wet,
The pavement black as jet.

And down the Avenues
Italians, blacks, and Jews

Seek shelter where it's dry.
The wet glow in the sky,

Descends and lights the flood
As though speckled with blood.

The stories that are told
By huddled young and old

Crackle with talk and work,
Complaints against New York,

And whoosh of rain and wind.
When it has slightly thinned

The street is on its way
Again from night to day.

In a mere century
No one here now will see

Our city as the rain
Comes pouring down again.

Jeffrey Carson has been living on Paros since 1970 and has recently returned from a visit to his native New York.
