Naoussa Desalination Plant

The desalination plant in Naoussa has now been operating successfully since June. Once microbiology tests by the Ministry of Health were completed to certify the water as being of drinking quality, the treated water began to be pumped into the water mains network. The plant uses a system which filters and then sterilizes the water with ultraviolet rays. Special membranes trap the salt whilst enrichening the water with minerals so that the water produced is clean, tasty and of high quality.

The suppliers of the plant, Ionics Italba, have conducted training for the desalination programme employees - Petros Aliprantis (Plant Operator), Georgos Makridis (Municipal Engineer), Irini Triantafilou (DEYAP chemist) and Georgos Arkoulis (DEYAP).

Until now, the water in the Naoussa river had just run into the sea and been wasted; today it is used to produce over 50m3 of purified water per hour, supplying enough water for the Naoussa district as well as for some agricultural purposes. One of the largest and most important projects to have ever been implemented in Naoussa, this plant is intended to supply water to Naoussa year-round, and especially to meet the area's increased demand for water during the summer months.
