Garbage Burning

by Trudy Petridi, September 2002
Following up on our recent articles about the garbage situation on Paros, we are getting conflicting information from the various parties involved. On the one hand, the Municipality informs us that all garbage burning has stopped, that rubbish is now buried and the study to find a single site is already underway. On the other, Naoussa residents say that the garbage at the Sarakiniko dump was set on fire again on August 15th and is still smoking even now!

Tensions in Naoussa were high at the peak of the tourist season as some residents blamed others for the fact that their actions were causing problems with garbage collection, whilst those who are trying to force a solution argue that this is a matter that affects us all and in which we should be united. Their case against the Municipality for violating health and safety laws is due to be heard in Syros on September 5th.
