Poet's Corner

Colossal Wind
by Jeffrey Carson

You can't help but hear this colossal wind
Coming off the sea; it dwarfs the cypresses,
Wrecks clouds and anthills, piles stones
On beaches, wrapping them in weed.

Give thanks you're safe from shipwreck
And the weather reports delirium, when even
The ancient olive with its thick roots strains
For stature and the roofbeams of your cottage
Creak with effort and you know they'll hold.

The dog lies alert in the open garage,
The cats crouch nervously behind her,
Her long ears lie flat.
The electricity's out, the bikes knocked over,
A flowerpot's rolling.

Give thanks
You're safe from shipwreck when the colossal sea
And wind are swelling with reflux of eros
That hardly ever has itself in balance.

Born in New York, Jeffrey Carson has been living on Paros and writing about it in verse and prose since 1970. He is on the faculty of the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts.
