Saving Our Bees

In the Spring and Autumn 2012 issues of Paros Life & Naxos Life we wrote extensively about the catastrophic damage to the bee population on Paros caused directly by the indiscriminate use of neonicotinoid insecticides to combat the red palm weevil infestations in palm trees.  We also gave details of some alternative methods available for dealing with the weevils.

Anna John (Anna’s Organic Café on Naxos) and Cynthia Wells informed us that one method that has been used with some success is the biological insecticide Naturalis-L which contains lives spores of Beuvaria bessina fungus that infect and kill the weevils. Available in Germany from palmruessler.eu, it can also be ordered in Greece from www.intrachem.gr (under www.intrachem.gr/gr/proionta.php, choose Εντομοκτόνα).

There was finally some good news for the bees in April when the European Commission banned the use of neonicotinoids, pending further scientific research, for two years effective 1 December 2013. The decision was reached thanks to a massive mobilization by the Avaaz movement, beekeepers and other non-governmental organizations and the delivery of a 2.6 million signature petition showing that a huge number of EU citizens put our health and environment before the profits of giant chemical producers. Bayer and Syngenta are lobbying hard to undermine the EU decision, however, so we need to keep up the pressure.  Show your support by signing the new Avaaz petition at avaaz.org/en/save_the_bees_global
