New Statue of Nike

by Antonio Corso
The most recently found statue of Parian lychnites marble (coming from the first quarry of Marathi) has a style dating to around 440 BC. The statue appeared in Rome’s antiquarian market, it is without a certified provenance, and is currently being exhibited by the Fondazione Sorgente Group which bought it in their own exposition hall at 132 Via del Tritone, Rome.

Prof. Eugenio La Rocca, who is about to publish his findings, believes she is Athena Nike and therefore from Attica, based on his belief that the round object worn by the goddess on her chest is the aegis of Athena.

As I have never seen aegides with this shape and the supposed aegis has no Gorgoneion (representation of the head of a Gorgon), I believe it is in fact a round-shaped gem used to fix the drapery of the goddess. Therefore, in my opinion, she is Nike and not Athena Nike.

Additionally, the essential folding of the drapery with slightly curved folds echoing one another is not typical of the Attic tradition of the Parthenonic times but is Ionic. The statue is in close relationship with the famous Nike of Paros with an updated style and for this reason it is possible to attribute it to a Parian workshop of the third quarter of the 5th century BC.
