Books: Parian Chronicles-Foreign Affairs with a Greek Island
The foreigners in the title are a mixture of Australian, American, Canadian, Danish, Dutch, English, German, Irish and Scots, some of whom have been on Paros since the 1960s. In this collection of personal stories, sixteen writers share their memories and some photographs of their early days here and celebrate their continuing love affair with this beautiful island.
The compilers, Fionnuala Brennan and Charlotte Carlin, contacted as many people from that era as they could think of, encouraging people to write the story of how they got ‘involved’ with Paros with the only requirement that the contributors write in English, as this is the common language for most of us. Everyone therefore is responsible for the content of their own story.
These stories should make interesting reading for lovers of Paros as they tell of a very different time and place before tourism changed the ancient way of life of the island and also before the present burdens of financial troubles and deep uncertainty in Greece.
The book will be presented at a book launch on 22 September at 7.30pm at Damianos Taverna in Ambelas, at which event the book will be available to the public.
