AXIA FESTIVAL 2012
10 & 12 August
International Festival of Music, Art & Literature
“NEW MOON SERENADE”
Founders and directors of the Axia International Festival, Alexander Reichardt and Katharina Bolesch, are pleased to announce the appointment of Nigel Shore as the new Artistic Director of the festival. Shore is internationally renowned as a musician; his knowledge and creativity will greatly enhance the festival, which is already gaining favourable recognition worldwide.
The 2012 Festival is proud to present two special concerts in the atmospheric square of Halki, Naxos. You are invited to join them on a musical journey under the stars of the Naxos sky, a New Moon Serenade from Bach to Bossa Nova and from Villa-Lobos to Jazz with seven artists from Greece, England, Australia, Sweden, Germany and Japan.
The first concert on 10 August at 9pm will present Naxos guitarist Nikos Karavias, a young musician of great talent who is studying at the renowned Mozarteum in Salzburg. He will share the evening with cellist Anna Carewe and pianist-composer Philip Mayers from Berlin in an eclectic programme ranging from Bach, Fauré and Mendelssohn to Astor Piazzolla and Philip Mayers himself.
Previous visitors and friends of the Axia International Festival will be thrilled to see the return of Keiko Borjeson and Hans Limburg for the second concert on 12 August at 9pm. This evening is also inspired by Bach and opens with haunting duets by Villa-Lobos performed by Nigel Shore (oboe) and Hans Limburg (guitar), including the much-loved Bachianas Brasileiras no.5. The Brazilian theme continues with prize-winning Bossa Nova singer-guitarist Hans Limburg in a selection of music from Rio de Janeiro, and the evening ends with innovative jazz pianist Keiko Borjeson and her husband Håkan Börjeson on violin and bass violin, promising an exciting finale to this year’s festival.
A highlight to this year’s festival is the exhibition by Peter Nicolaides: ‘Treasures of the Aegean’ which will take place at the Fish & Olive Gallery, Halki from 10-20 August, part of Nicolaides’ continuing effort with Pierre-Yves Cousteau to establish a network of marine protected areas in the Cyclades.
“There is a profound and decisive role played by the maritime and marine element in the development of Aegean civilisations and cultures. The exemplary, inspired work of Katharina and Alex is in the line of this cultural, quality evolution of the Aegean," Nicolaides says.
