Paronaxia Arts: Summer Classical Piano Music Concerts

by David Salihi
Summer Classical Piano Music Concerts
Paros - 16-22 July 2012

We are pleased to announce four classical music recitals on 16, 18, 20 and 22 July in the Archilochos Hall, Paroikia. All the recitals will begin at 8.30pm and are free admission.

This is the third consecutive year in which we celebrate with our mini-festival for classical piano. Last year we welcomed the addition of a violin and soprano and this year we are excited to announce the addition of a cello.

The festival commences on 16 July with cellist Athina Ampatzidou and pianist Evi Kiriazidou. Athina begins with a solo, the Praeludium from Bach’s Cello Suite No.4. followed by Beethoven’s sonata Op.69 for cello and piano. The second half starts with Faure’s sad and haunting Elégie, Op.24, one of his most popular tunes. Next is Schumann’s Fantasiestucke, Op.73 and From the Bohemian Forest, Silent Woods, by Dvorak. As a complete contrast and to complete the recital there will be two Nuevo Tangos by the Argentinian compatriots Jose Bragato and Astor Piazzolla finishing off the night with a crescendo of Argentinian passion.

The second recital on 18 July is by pianist Michail Tsiaras. Michail will begin with a Bach prelude and fugue, in C# minor from book 1, followed by Haydn’s sonata in E flat, No.49 from the Hoboken Haydn catalogue.

Michail will then move away from the German baroque/classical period, to Greek composer Yannis Constantinidis, the last of the handful of composers referred to collectively as the Greek National School, with his Sonatine no.1. Then the music travels to Spain, since the second half consists of four pieces from Albeniz’s Iberia.

On 20 July pianist Evi Kiriazidou returns to our mini-festival stage. Some of you may remember Evi from last year when she gave a dazzling rendition of Samuel Barber’s ‘Souvenirs’. This year Evi will start her recital with Mozart’s sonata, KV 310 in A minor. Next, firmly in Greece, are five pieces from For a little white seashell by Manos Hadjidakis, followed by Chopin’s Ballade Op.38 in F and Mussorgsky’s masterpiece piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition.

The final recital on 22 July is by pianist Nikos Kyriosoglou. Nikos will begin with Haydn’s sonata in E, No.31, followed by three pieces from De Clavecin, by Jean-Philippe Rameau - Le Rappel des Oiseaux, L'Egyptienne and La Poule originally composed for the harpsichord and two waltzes, Op.69 by Chopin.

Next is Liszt’s The Fountains of the Villa d’Este and Barcarolle Op.46 by the Russian Liapounow and Liszt again, with three pieces that comprise Venice and Naples, the supplement to the second year of Liszt’s three year volume Années de Pélerinage (Years of Pilgrimage).

Those attending all of the concerts will hear flavours from many countries, Argentina, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Russia, Spain, and just a whiff of Bohemia. The artists will fill the warm summer air breeze with the sounds of glorious music, creating magical experiences you won’t want to miss!
