Paronaxia Arts: 2nd International Summer Jazz Academy & Festival

2nd International Summer Jazz Academy & Festival
ALL YOU NEED IS JAZZ!
Paros - 5-12 July 2012

The 2nd edition of the International Jazz Academy & Festival takes place this summer from 5-12 July 2012 in Lefkes.

The event is a collaboration between Athena Perantinou of the Paros Jazz Foundation & Festival, the festival’s artistic director Marc Buronfosse, musician and teacher at the Paris National Conservatory of Region, and Arts Culture Europe (ACE) – a non profit organisation for the promotion of music and arts in Europe.

The Paros Jazz Academy consists of a team of experienced teachers and artists all with international backgrounds who are sharing their knowledge and passion for music with students from around the world. Daily lessons include seminars on the use of musical instruments (electric and acoustic bass, saxophone, piano, electric and acoustic guitar, harp and drums), vocal lessons, group sessions and improvisation sessions. There is also a jazz initiation workshop in improvisation, focusing on the different aspects of phrasing, rhythm, sound, harmony, melody and creativity. Regular jam sessions by the academy’s teachers and students at the Albatross Hotel in Logaras and in the harbour of Piso Livadi have proven to be a popular attraction and welcome addition to the local cultural scene during the week-long academy and festival.

Founder Athena Perantinou says: “We started from scratch to create a sustainable and cultural tourism product that attracts quality tourism on Paros and we have accomplished our goal by using the existing infrastructure and facilities of the island. For example, the community of Paros is supporting us by providing the school buildings in Lefkes for lessons, we are collaborating with local hotels and restaurants as well as cultural associations and institutions such as the Environmental & Cultural Park of Paros where we are holding one of our concerts. We also promote Parian culture by presenting a Jazz & Parian Poetry Concert every year in Lefkes, supporting a project led by Christos Georgousis, a well-known local writer and poet, which is engaging schools and students in a poetry contest. The school students’ poems are included in our Jazz & Poetry event and the Jazz Academy’s composition class composes music for these poems to present at the concert.

Perhaps the best way to sum up the success is in the words of one of the Paros Jazz Academy’s students who told us: ‘Thank you for such a great experience at Paros, I will never forget the atmosphere. I have come away with a deeper concept of music and life and have made many new friends from around the globe.’”
