Paronaxia Arts: Artistic Journey in Paros

Artistic Journey in Paros: 7-15 July, 2012

This joint effort by the Friends of Paros Association and KDEPAP (the cultural branch of the municipality of Paros) is a continuation of the work begun in 2005 with the ‘Art Map’ created by the International Paros Art Circle (IPAC). The ‘Artistic Journey in Paros’ is the realisation of an important project that supports and promotes artists who live and work on the island.

“The primary pursuit of KDEPAP is the reinforcement of the cultural identity of the island, which since antiquity has shown a dynamic artistic presence... both directly through the famous creators in the fields of arts and letters and indirectly through the unique marble of Paros from which many masterpieces were created,” says KDEPAP President Anna Kagani-Kortianou. “But we mainly ought to support and promote the artists who... regardless of nationality, origin and orientation, are all ‘Parians’ one way or another, since they are sensitive to the charismatic atmosphere of Paros. “

The Artistic Journey offers a unique opportunity to Parian residents and to seasonal visitors, Greek and foreign, to visit the studios of painters, sculptors, carvers, ceramists and photographers, to experience the devotion and the creative passion of each artist, seen on site as they work with ‘open doors’. The project further enhances the international profile of the island, the authenticity of its art, and allows Paros to make a significant contribution to cultural tourism in Greece, especially important during these difficult time, as is emphasised by art historian and critic Dora Iliopoulou-Rogan and FoP President Giorgos Vlantas.

Vlantas also tells us: “Having already highlighted the artistic dynamic of Paros and organised exhibitions in the European Parliament, we now envisage activating an essential introduction among the local people, the visitors and the creators who... live, are inspired and create in the unique atmosphere of the island. Let them all remember what civilization means, not as an expendable good but as an Idea. With this event we look forward to contributing to the development of cultural tourism, so crucial to our country, always motivated by the love of our island.”

Participating artists are: Willya van der Most, Robert van der Most, Eduard van Giel, Eleni Yemeliari, Aristidis Varias, Cameron Hockenson, Paulien Lethen, Jan Mulder, Neva Bergemann, Bix Lye, Susan Daboll, Wim Drion, Jane Morris Pack, John Pack, Jun Pierre Shiozawa, Hans Giesen, Dimitra Chanioti, Natassa Biza, Manolis Fokianos, Brigitte Karavia, Frederic Bootz, Yiorgos Vouros, Angelika Vaxevanidou, Yiannis Chaniotis, Amalia Ferentinou, Dimitris Sifneos, Yiorgios Marmarinos, Richard King, Alexia Zikos, Benetos Skiadas, Stelios & Ramona Gikas, Peter Seibt and Yorgos Papageorgiou.
