An odyssey is defined as a series of adventurous journeys, usually marked by many changes of fortune. The word is originally taken from the name of the main character, Odysseus, who appears in Homer’s epic poem ‘The Odyssey’. This summer’s theme, ‘Odyssey to the Orient’, combines artworks by a group of sixteen international artists with a collection of antique Japanese kimonos and household objects that Dutch-born artist Paulien Lethen collected when she lived in Japan. In this rare and exotic setting, viewers are transported on an imaginary journey from Paros to the far-away islands of Japan. On Friday evenings there are also concerts by Lethen’s sister, jazz pianist and vocalist Heleen Schuttevaêr, with Greek and international musicians, poetry readings and other events. Holland Tunnel Gallery lies somewhat hidden behind the picturesque Aghia Triada Church in the Market Street of Paroikia and both floors of the 17th century merchant’s house, including the high salon (salla), dining room, library and former bedrooms and the courtyard, provide a unique setting for arts all summer long.
Participating artists are Angiola Churchill, Serge Gavronsky, Alexi Komodikis, Susan Daboll, Fran Kornfeld, Claudia Lazzarini, Paulien Lethen, Richard Lethen, Alexandra Limpert, Bix Lye, Jan Mulder, Kazuko Miyamoto, Yukako Okudiara, Jacques Roch, Alice Meyer Wallace, Apostolis Zolotakis.
Gallery director Paulien Lethen, an artist herself, started the summer extension of her New York Holland Tunnel Gallery on Paros twelve years ago, in 2000. She chooses classical themes from Greek mythology and philosophy for each exhibition and invites artists to reflect on these themes and make special works of art for the exhibitions.
