Alison Cadbury (1933-2010)

Alison Cadbury died on 29 October 2010 at her home, surrounded by close friends, after a prolonged illness.

Alison was a long term resident of Eugene, Oregon, USA. She also lived for a number of years in the San Francisco Bay Area and on the island of Paros. Her time in Greece was the subject of her book, ‘Panigyri: A Celebration of Life in a Greek Village’. An excerpt from ‘Panigyri’ was published in the April 2010 issue of Paros Life & Naxos Life. (See the Backissues section at www.paroslife.com)

Several of her Greek essays were published in the Georgia Review, Missouri Review, and Ascent. She was the recipient of numerous literary and scholarly awards including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Prose, a fellowship from Oregon Literary Arts, a Pushcart prize, and a Fulbright award to do research for her book in Greece.

Alison’s love of words was the impetus of her life. She was a wicked Scrabble player. A valued member of several writing groups in Eugene, Alison also taught writing and literature at Lane Community College and earlier at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. She received the Faculty Recognition Award at LCC for excellence in teaching.

She valued her community of friends above all else. If you knew and loved Alison Cadbury, please join us for a celebration of her life on Friday 7 January, 2011 at 7pm at Tsunami Books, 2585 Willamette Street in Eugene. Memorial contributions may be given to Food for Lane County, 770 Bailey Hill Road, Eugene, OR 97402, USA.
