Panayiotis Kovaios, Mayoral Candidate - AMORGOS
Panayiotis Kovaios was born in Athens in 1962 where he completed his studies to obtain a degree in aeronautics. Due to a lack of demand at that time for aeronautics skills in the Greek airforce, he instead decided to pursue a career in tourism, working for about 20 years in large travel agencies in Athens before settling in Amorgos, where he has been living since 2000. Since becoming a resident of the island he has been involved in the real estate business, run a restaurant in Langada and managed a courier service.
Kovaios showed an active interest in public affairs since he was young, heading student councils both at school and university. Later he participated in various trade union movements, first as general secretary and then as president of the Union of Tourist Buses of Attica.
Today he is president of the parents association of the Amorgos High School, general secretary of the voluntary rescue team of Amorgos (ODA) and a founding member of the animal welfare group that was recently set up in Amorgos.
He possesses a deep love for Amorgos and in his teens was a member of the youth association ‘Aghia Paraskevi’ of Kato Meria, of which his father was a founding member and treasurer for many years. His desire, shared by the other members of the New Strength party, is to see Amorgos secure a place among the group of islands that have managed to achieve progress, enabling everyone, but especially the young, to find work and prosperity on their home island.
He has two daughters, Anastasia, who this year was admitted into the politics department of the University of Crete, and Evangelia, still at high school.
