Who will we pick?

Municipal (dimotikes) and regional (periphereiakes) elections (ekloges) are taking place on Sunday, 7 November from 7am to 7pm (with a second round on Sunday, 14 November, if the winning party does not secure more than 50% of the vote). Expatriates and foreign nationals, i.e. non-Greek EU nationals, as well as those who come from other countries who have registered to vote, will be able to participate in this year’s municipal elections, but not in the regional ones, which are only open to Greek nationals.

If you haven’t voted in Greece before, this is what you need to know about the voting process:
On voting day take your passport to your local polling station where your name will be checked off the electoral roll and you will be handed an envelope and a stack of ballot papers (psifodeltia). You will also be handed a blank white ballot (lefko psifodeltio) used to constitute a ‘protest vote’ when voters want to demonstrate their unhappiness with the choice of candidates or their denunciation of the political system. Each voting paper (except the blank one) includes the name of the candidate running for mayor, as well as the names of the municipal councillors and local community councillors who are running under the mayor’s ticket. You need to put an X next to the name of your chosen municipal councillor(s) and local community councillor(s), not next to the name of the mayoral candidate (although doing this will not invalidate your ballot). Under the Greek electoral system mayors are elected when their councillors receive the greatest number of votes. Putting an X next to the name of a mayoral candidate will only be necessary in case there is a second round of elections. You can only choose from among councillors belonging to the same party. Once you have selected your preferred candidate(s), place your chosen ballot paper into the envelope provided, discard the other ballot papers (including the blank white one) and then place the envelope into the ballot box. Depending on where you live, you are entitled to make the following number of Xs next to your chosen candidate(s):

CANDIDATES
See the September and October 2010 issues of Paros Life & Naxos Life for the first two sets of interviews with the mayoral candidates in our region. In this issue we have interviews with the remaining candidates, except for: Dimitris Margaritis (Naxos), Panayiotis Kovaios (Amorgos) and Nikitas Roussos (Amorgos) who unfortunately did not manage to respond in time.

Since last month, two new candidates announced that they would be running – Panagiotis Sfalagakos (Antiparos) and Τhekla Kizi-Xatziandreou (Naxos) – and three candidates announced that they were withdrawing – Ilias Kountromichalis (Paros), Thanasis Grillakis (Naxos) and Antonis Vekris (Amorgos). Here is the full list of the mayoral candidates and as much contact information as we have been able to obtain on each of them. The complete list of candidates (psifodeltio) for each municipal party is available on each party’s website, blog or Facebook page, or it can be requested by email. If anyone experiences difficulty in obtaining the lists, let us know at info@paroslife.com and we will attempt to obtain one on your behalf.
