A playful approach to sustainable cities

Paladin Studios, a Dutch company that produces gaming software, has launched EnerCities, an online game which asks players to construct a sustainable city. Players are faced with dilemmas such as whether to construct coal plants or invest in renewable sources. The game reveals the long-term effects of their decisions.

The project, which aims to educate young adults from the ages of 15 to 20, is co-funded by the European Commission programme Intelligent Energy Europe. Now that Paros is Greece’s test case for the environmental programme Litus Go, any means of teaching sustainability is welcome — especially one this well thought out. (See page 9.)
