The audiovisual archives “CYCLOS” are now available at the Paros Public Library for anyone interested in material concerning Paros and the Cyclades.
These archives have been processed and installed on a dedicated computer, and are easily accessible during library hours. The project was funded by the Association “Friends of the Library”.
On 30 October, film director Yiannis Tribitsidas gave a practical presentation at the library on how to use the computer programme. The material is sorted under four main categories: Movies, Music, Recordings and Documents, Photographs. A table of contents describing each item that has been added so far was given out to those present and it includes a rich selection in different languages recording the customs, songs, history and stories of Paros and, more generally, the Cycladic islands. The archives provide new research and educational opportunities. Mr Tritsibidas, who began this initiative, invited teachers to participate and to find ways of presenting this material to the students. Private viewings can be arranged for small groups at the library, though it would be ideal if the archives could have their own space for accommodating a larger audience.
Yiannis Tritsibidas gave examples of how this project can evolve and develop new opportunities, such as the launch of a thematic film festival, or they could be used by organisations for obtaining background information on events. There are very few such archives in Greece. For this idea to grow however, it is important that the selection expands with the donation of additional material. The archives are “locked”, so the user cannot download or copy the material without previously gaining permission from the owner.
Don’t miss the opportunity to discover more about Paros and the Cycladic islands at your leisure, and if you have items available that can be shared through this programme, contact the Library on 22840-28233.
