Remembering Parian Hero Nikolas Stellas

On Sunday morning, 24th May, Parians and local authorities will gather once again – as they do every year – in Marpissa to honour World War II hero, Nikolas Stellas, who was hanged in the village by enemy troops in May 1944.

Nikolas Iakovos Stellas (Yiakoumis), born in 1921, grew up in Damalia, in the area of Stroumboula in Paros. He was a brave, smart, honest and ethical young man according to all who knew him. During the German occupation he was conscripted to work at the airport which was being constructed by the German army in Marmara. On 14th May 1944, a team of Greek and English commandos arrived in Glyfa with the purpose of blowing up German locations, attacking the enemy troops and capturing their commander. This could not be done without the help of local patriots. The Stellas family was amongst the first to join this cause, led by the fearless 23-year-old Nikolas.

The commandos were separated into two teams. One team, led by Manolis Gryllakis, would attack the German forces in Marpissa; the other team would hit the village of Dragoulas (Prodromos), led by Antonis Delentas. Nikolas Stellas belonged to the latter group.

Unfortunatly the mission didn’t go as planned and the young man fell into the hands of the enemy. Despite being interrogated and subjected to cruel methods of torture, he refused to give any information to the occupation forces about his fellow members in the resistance.

He was hanged on 21st May 1944 and a monument was later erected to his memory. Every year Parians gather to pay their respects and remember him and the sacrifice he made to save his fellow countrymen.
