Are You Aware?

October is “Breast Cancer Awareness” month, during which an international health campaign takes place annually to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention and cure. This campaign also offers support and information to those affected by breast cancer.

Early diagnosis of the disease is critical to survival and this can only be achieved through regular checks and tests, especially on women over 40, but also on younger women if there are additional risk factors involved. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 8 women in developed countries will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

It is, therefore, extremely important that Paros and Antiparos residents will soon be able to have regular mammogram screening tests at the Paros Health Centre.

Although a mammography machine was installed at the Health Centre over a year ago, it is only now – thanks to the arrival of the specialist doctor, Mr Panaritis on September 10th – that the machine can be used. Together with the managing committee of the Health Centre, Dr Panaritis is currently organizing the necessary preliminary procedures so that the machine can function successfully. First of all, Committee President Giorgos Bizas told us, Dr Panaritis has requested the training of the Health Centre’s radiography operators on the new machine, as one person alone cannot manage all the screenings. Mr Bizas will ask the mammography machine operator at the Syros Hospital to come to Paros to perform the necessary training and told us that as soon as this has taken place – within the next 1-2 months – people will be able to book mammogram appointments locally instead of having to travel to Syros or Athens for screening.

Although the Naxos Health Centre-Hospital also has a mammography machine installed on the premises, it is currently not operating on a regular basis. Mr Logothetis, President of the Management Committee, tells us that further news on the status of this machine and other health services should be available next month. We will update you as soon as we have additional information.
