Wireless ADSL Connectivity

A major challenge for more and more people living full-time or part-time on Paros is high-speed Internet access at their home. While it is now readily available in the main towns and villages, there are some more remote parts of the island where the major service providers have no definite plans to install high-speed access in the near future.

But this doesn’t mean that you have to give up your beautiful traditional little country house and move into town! There is a solution. Thanks to Costas Roditis and his team at Computer House, the installation shown in the picture above provides perfect wireless ADSL throughout a house where there isn’t even an OTE phone line yet! How?

The small aerial shown in the photograph above receives a wireless signal from a second aerial on the roof of a house approximately 500m away where a friend’s home has a phone line with ADSL. Together with two D-link access points (encased in the weather-proof box you see attached to the wall beside the aerial) this creates a “bridge” from one house to the other. The distance between the aerials can be as far as 20km as long as there is “line of sight” between the two buildings. Sometimes even when line of sight does not exist it is still possible to create a link using repeaters.

Computer House have already installed 25 wireless set-ups like this one, including one over a distance of 15km in Ikaria.
