Paros Unplugged!

by Angelica Eder, February 2007
With the support of the EU Programme ISTOS, the Municipality of Paros has developed a wireless communications system that, as a first step, will serve the areas of Paroikia and Naoussa. The ultimate aim of this effort is to further the development of the island and to offer the following services to the local community, business owners and visitors:
* To enable users to have wireless Internet access everywhere on the island including access to information for visitors regarding municipal services and businesses (accommodation, car rental, etc).

* To facilitate easy and direct communication with all municipal services (the issuing of permits, certificates, communication with staff and much more).

* To provide a free local telephone service (via Skype) and live video from PCs, PDAs (personal digital assistants) or mobile phones which are equipped for that purpose (this service is still under development).

At the moment the aerials for this huge “hotspot” are positioned in Paroikia at Livadia, at the Port Police, in Mando Mavrogenous Square, at the Municipal Library, along the seafront at the Kapi/ERT3 building, at the Town Hall (Aghia Anna), near the football field and on the mountain above the town close to the Monastery of Ag.Anargiri. In Naoussa they are located around the new marina, at the bridge, in the new square in the port and the old fishing port up towards the church.

The speed is currently 2 Mbps with plans to eventually upgrade the whole system further to speeds of 4 Mbps and later 16 Mbps and to set up additional aerials to expand the hotspot areas to gradually cover other parts of the island including Lefkes, Kostos, Golden Beach, Aliki and other areas.

For updates on the progress of this project visit the (English language version) of the municipal website www.paros.gr.
