Beloved Son of Paros

by Silvia Lubitz-Skaramagka, August 2006
Our great Greek singer from Paros, Yannis Parios, will, for the first time on his native island, be giving two concerts entitled “All Blue” at 9pm on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th August at the Municipal Athletic Ground, Paroikia. The concerts have been organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Paros and with all proceeds going towards the purchase of Paros’s air ambulance. I am proud to be working for Leptos Estates – one of the sponsors of this uniquely important cultural event.

In an exclusive interview published in the May 2006 edition of “Parion Fos” (“Parian Light”: the new high quality magazine produced by Nikos Rangoussis-Laoutaris since June 2005), I particularly liked what Yannis Parios said when talking about our island – that nowhere else does he feel as good as he does on Paros. Paros is the first station in his life, chosen by his parents as the place of his birth, and it will be the final station that he himself will choose when he dies. The island is, therefore, extremely important to him. He calls it a “blessed place” which he emphasizes does not “belong” to us. He comments that the future of Paros is in all of our hands and that we must protect the island and its special place in the Aegean Archipelagos. An idea we might all keep in mind.

Yet throughout his long and successful career, Parios says he always felt uncomfortable at the idea of singing in front of all his friends among the Parian people. When he heard about the Municipality’s plans for purchasing an air ambulance for the island, however, he felt motivated to find a way to contribute to such an important project, especially since he has had personal experience worrying about a friend who needed to get to Athens in an emergency for medical treatment.

And so, finally, for us and for the island, this month we will hear this most beloved son of Paros sing right here at home. Don’t miss it!

Advance ticket sales for the “All Blue” concerts cost 20 euros and can be purchased at DEPAP (Town Hall), KEP (Citizen’s Service Centre at the Port), Bizas Bookstore and Audiophile in Paroikia, Paria Lexis and Para Pente bookstores in Naoussa, and various outlets in all the main villages on the island.
