Municipal News

February Press Releases, March 2006
Programme for the Unemployed

The Municipality of Paros, in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour and the European Union, has begun a series of seminars during the month of February for the unemployed on the island.

Funded 75% by the EU and 25% by the Ministry of Labour, it offers places on four seminars (Tourist Guide, Selling & Packaging of Local Products, Using Technology in Tourism and Cultural Events Management).

Participants are paid a small amount for each hour of attendance and, following completion of the seminars, 60 subsidized positions will be created in local businesses (40 at a rate of 16 euros per day for a period of 18 months; 20 at a rate of 21 euros per day for a period of 9 months). A meeting is being held at the Archilochos Hall on March 1st for prospective employers. In addition 15 graduates will be given financial assistance (9,000 euros in three installments) to set up their own businesses. The skills learned will therefore be utilized locally in order to benefit the Parian community and economy.

Gourmet Media World Festival

Greece participated in the 2nd International Gourmet Media World Festival held in Cannes from 27-29 January with the TV show “Boukia and Synchorio” (“So Delicious”). Chef Elias Mamalakis travelled all around our island for the show which features the gastronomy of Paros including the highlight of kakavia (fish soup) on a fishingboat – providing a unique opportunity for great publicity for the island.

For further information on the festival see http://www.gourmet-voice.com.

Municipal Services Move

In order to better serve the Parian population, effective from 6th February 2006, the office of the KEP (Citizens Service Centre) and the cashier office of DEYAP (the water authority) have moved from the Town Hall to the space next to OTE opposite the bus station at the port in Paroikia.
