A State Visit - Christmas 1673

The Marquis de Nointel, French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, visited Paroikia in December 1673.

He was received by community leaders and honoured by three salvos from the guns of fourteen pirate ships anchored in the harbour.

The ambassador (who was also a man of the church) celebrated a mass at the Ekatontapyliani before enjoying Christmas dinner aboard the pirate galleon of Daniel of Malta who was a notorious freebooter. He then happily celebrated a midnight mass, this time deep in a cave at Antiparos, using a stalagmite as an altar table.
