Carnival in Marpissa

by Karen Barratt , April1999
The day before Kathari Deftera (Clean Monday) is traditionally Carnival Time and, as you can see from the photographs, great fun was had as always in Marpissa - from the youngest to the oldest inhabitant.

Everyone waited expectantly in the square to see the parade and they were not disappointed. A donkey led the procession which had the theme of a wedding. Smiles turned to chuckles as it was realised that the bride had a moustache and the bridegroom looked suspiciously like a female - as did the rider of the donkey. They were followed by people in all sorts of costumes from a digital telephone to a skeleton.

Everyone joined in the fun, quite a few of the 101 dalmations were ‘spotted’ - even a tiny baby. Afterwards in the square there was revelry, music and dancing at a make believe ‘wedding reception’.

The organisers of the Carnival are to be congratulated on producing such a good day and encouraging everyone, including the foreigners, to participate.
