Thank you so very much to the members of the Rotary Club of Paros for honouring me and Paros Life with an award for our ‚Äúcontribution in building bridges over the communities in Paros island‚ÄĚ, thank you to the advertisers who have committed to supporting us again in 2012 and thank you to everyone who is helping by sharing useful news and information with everyone else in our Paros Life &‚ÄąNaxos Life Facebook group.
Naxos is considered to be the birthplace of Dionysus, the ancient god of wine, drunken revelry and fertility in Greek mythology. For this reason, the islanders feel a special kind of kinship with him and the Apokries, or Carnival celebrations, held on the island are famous all over Greece with festivities taking place in almost all of the villages during the carnival period (this year from 5-26 February), especially during the final weekend before ‚ÄėClean Monday‚Äô and the start of Lent.
Something we badly need on the island and which has been missing since Lornie Caplan closed the "Beachcomber" on Market Street, is a shop selling second-hand items. It's good to hear that we will have one again, as this kind of shop is also an important community service.
Miriam Chaplin died suddenly and peacefully on 18 December 2011 in‚ÄąEngland. It was a great blessing that she remained contented and happy to the end; rare for those suffering from Alzheimer‚Äôs disease. A service of thankful rememberance for her life was held in Eastbourne, East Sussex.
We were very sad to hear of the fatal heart attack suffered by Lefteris Karistineos last November. Lefteris was a wonderful voice of encouragement and a source of much information and support in the early days of Naxos Life when it first came out in 2005.
On Saturday, 10 December, there was a total eclipse of the moon, when veiled Selene danced through Earth's umbral shadow; but it was only seen here at the end, vague and cool. The next total lunar eclipse will be in 2014. Just as predictable but predictably etesian, the Vocal Ensemble of the Aegean Center presented its winter programme at the pretty Catholic church of Saint Anthony.

Will there be enough water this summer to meet the needs of the island? This was a question in many people’s minds during the exceptionally dry months of last autumn. In early January there was a reassuring response from Stelios Fragoulis, President of DEYAP, the municipal water company of Paros. In a video interview with local news source Parianos Typos, Mr Fragoulis said that a new desalination unit is being installed at Peponas, near Parasporos. He said that if all remaining steps are taken as planned the unit will be functioning by the time of the August peak.
If you have a well or water bore on your property that you wish to continue using or to use in the future, you will need to make an application to the local municipality by the deadline of 16 June 2012.
